Keeping the front door on its hinges
A front door is painted where it hangs, so the house is never left without a lockable door. The handle set, kick plate and knocker are removed or masked, the weatherstripping is protected, and the face, edges and frame are cleaned and scuff-sanded before an exterior enamel goes on.
Wood, steel and fiberglass entry doors each prep differently, and the walk tells us which you have. A wood door with bare spots is spot primed, a steel door with rust at the bottom rail is cleaned back and primed, and a fiberglass door is cleaned and dulled so the enamel bonds.
The door is propped open while the enamel firms up, with the opening guarded, and it is not pulled tight against the weatherstripping until the product data sheet says the finish can take it. A tacky door closed too soon sticks to the seal and tears the new coat.
