About our kitchen cabinet painting & refinishing
Our team provides spray finishing with HVLP equipment, delivering smooth, even cabinet painting for homeowners and hard-wearing cabinet finishes for both residential and commercial projects. The crew that walks your kitchen is the crew that sprays it, and we write a scope naming the cleaner, the bonding primer and how many enamel coats each door receives.
From a hinge cup spinning loose in particle board to the last wiped shelf edge, our team handles every detail. Serving Temecula along with French Valley, Canyon Lake and Temescal Valley, we keep the counters covered, the sanding dust sealed in and the sheen matched from the first door to the last.
Why Temecula Premier Painting
How We Work
The person who looks at your walls is the person you call back, from the estimate to the final walk.
Refinish or replace: checking the cabinet boxes first
Refinishing is the better buy when the cabinet boxes are square, dry and solid, and replacement wins when they are not. A cabinet is a six-sided box closed on five sides, with a door or drawer on the sixth, and that box is the expensive part of any new kitchen. If it is sound, paint changes how the room looks and leaves the layout, the countertop and the plumbing exactly where they are.
At the walk we open every sink base first. Particle board swells for good once water reaches its core, so a sink cabinet that soaked up a slow leak is a carpentry repair or a replacement box, never a paint job. Next we check the face frames for square, the hinge holes for screws that spin, and the door panels for splits at the joints.
Temecula grew out of the subdivision boom that followed the 1985 completion of Interstate 15 and the fast growth of the 1990s, so many kitchens here hold production cabinets: plywood or particle board sides and bottoms with solid wood or MDF doors. Both door types take a sprayed enamel well. Three situations change the answer:
- Thermofoil doors, a PVC film vacuum formed over MDF, cannot be repaired once the film lifts, and paint laid over lifting film comes away with it. We tell you to replace those doors rather than coat them.
- MDF edges that have been soaked can swell and break, so a swollen edge is trimmed and sealed or that door is remade.
- Solid wood doors can be refinished again later, which is a good reason to keep them even if the boxes need work.
Compared with buying new or refacing, refinishing the cabinets you already own is the least expensive of the three routes when the boxes pass these checks.
Degreasing, and why it decides whether the paint holds
Grease is the main reason painted cabinets peel, so degreasing comes before any sanding. Cooking oil settles on the doors closest to the range and on every edge a hand grabs, and a primer laid over that film bonds to the grease instead of the wood. Sanding first only drives the residue into the scratches, where no rag reaches it.
Every door, drawer front and face frame gets the same order of prep:
- Wash with a degreasing cleaner. Trisodium phosphate is the traditional choice: it cleans, degreases and dulls an old gloss in one step before painting.
- Rinse twice, then let the wood dry fully.
- Scuff sand to break any remaining sheen, vacuum, then tack off the dust.
- Prime with a bonding primer matched to the old finish, whether that is a clear lacquer over stained oak or an earlier coat of paint.
- Fill dents and open grain where you want a smooth painted look, then spot prime the filled areas again.
Primer exists to make the finish coat adhere, and on cabinets it carries more load than anywhere else in a house, because the doors are pulled, pushed and wiped every day. Large cabinet makers put one or two coats of primer under the paint and a protective coat over it, and a refinish copies that sequence on site rather than skipping straight to colour.

The process
Doors sprayed off site, boxes finished in place: how the job runs
A sprayed finish is how a painted cabinet gets close to factory smooth, and doors are sprayed lying flat, away from the kitchen. Paint on cabinet doors is normally put on with a spray gun rather than a brush or roller for exactly this reason, and a door on a drying rack cannot sag or run down its face.
Doors and drawer fronts come off
The European cup hinges on most modern cabinets release without tools and adjust on three axes, so doors come off cleanly and go back aligned. Each door, its hinges and its place in the kitchen are labelled before anything leaves.
Sprayed in a controlled space
We spray doors and fronts with HVLP equipment, which lands a higher share of the coating on the part and sends less into the air as overspray. Backs go first, then faces and all four edges.
Boxes finished in place
Face frames, end panels and exposed sides are cleaned, primed and enameled where they stand. Countertops, floors, appliances and the backsplash are masked, and the room is closed off with plastic so the dust stays inside it.
Rehung, adjusted and walked
Doors go back on their labelled hinges, the gaps between them are evened out, and we walk the kitchen with you door by door before the last of the masking comes down. Every coating we use here has to meet South Coast AQMD Rule 1113, which limits the VOC content of architectural coatings across a district that takes in the non-desert part of Riverside County, so the product list on your scope is one that can legally go on in Temecula.
Living without the kitchen while the finish goes on
The kitchen stays partly usable during a cabinet refinish, and the estimate states which days it is fully off limits. The sink and the refrigerator normally stay in service while the boxes are masked around them; the stretch when every cabinet face is wet is the one to plan meals around.
Dry to the touch is not the same as hard. Paints go through a chemical cure after they dry, and an alkyd enamel, for example, hardens as oxygen in the air crosslinks it. How long that takes depends on the product, the film thickness and the weather, so the product data sheet sets our recoat and rehang timing instead of a guess. For the first stretch after the doors go back:
- Open doors and drawers by their pulls, not by the edges.
- Keep tape, sticky hooks and dish towels off the new faces.
- Wipe spills with a soft cloth instead of scrubbing.
- Let soft-close dampers do the work rather than pushing doors shut hard.
Before the start date, clear the counters and empty the cabinets you want painted inside. A coffee and microwave station in the dining room or garage makes the wet days easy, and pets stay out of the masked area, because a hair caught in wet enamel stays there.

Cabinet painting cost by kitchen size
Cabinet refinishing in Temecula is typically estimated at roughly $3,000 to $12,000 per kitchen, and the count of doors and drawer fronts moves that number more than the size of the room. A galley kitchen with a dozen doors and an island kitchen with a pantry wall and wall ovens are different jobs even at the same square footage.
What moves the estimate:
- Door and drawer front count, and whether the doors are flat slab or raised panel, since a profiled panel takes longer to sand and coat.
- Condition: grease load, water damage at the sink base, failing paint from an earlier job, and stripped hinge screws.
- Colour change, such as dark stained oak going to white, which can add a primer coat.
- Inside surfaces, if you want shelves and box interiors finished too.
- Extra cabinetry in the same visit: a vanity, a wet bar, a laundry run or built-in desk cabinets.
- Grain filling on oak where you want no visible grain through the paint.
- Lead-safe practices under the EPA RRP rule if the house was built before 1978 and the old finish will be sanded.
A sprayed lacquer or conversion varnish finish is typically estimated higher, at roughly $5,000 to $15,000 for a kitchen, because it takes more spray time and more coats. Owners of rental homes, office break rooms and builders with a run of model kitchens can send a cabinet count and photos for a per-kitchen bid.
Every figure on this page is an estimate and subject to change. Your written quote, given after we have counted the doors and checked the sink base, sets the final price.
Why homeowners book the kitchen walk with us
The kitchen walk is free, and you leave it with a written scope rather than a verbal number. It lists the degreaser, the primer, the enamel and its sheen, the number of coats on doors and on boxes, what happens to the hardware, and which days the kitchen is out of use.
- One painted sample door or drawer front in your chosen colour, approved in your own kitchen light before the full run is sprayed.
- Labelled doors and hinges, so every door returns to its own opening.
- A door-by-door walkthrough with you at the end, with touch-ups done before we leave.
- A written warranty on the finish.
- Licensed, insured and bonded, with the licence printed in the footer of every page.
We refinish kitchens across Temecula, from the master-planned streets of Redhawk to the streets around Old Town, and in neighbouring Murrieta and French Valley. Call or send the form with a photo of your kitchen to book a walk.

Questions
Kitchen Cabinet Painting & Refinishing: Common Questions
Is painting kitchen cabinets cheaper than replacing them?
Yes, when the boxes are sound. Refinishing keeps the cabinet boxes, the layout and the countertop, so you pay for prep and finish rather than new carcasses, installation and the plumbing and countertop work that replacement drags along. If the sink base has swollen or the doors are thermofoil that is peeling, those parts are replaced and the rest can still be painted.
How long is my kitchen out of use?
It depends on the door count and the product, and the estimate states the start date and which days the cabinets are wet. The sink and refrigerator usually stay in service. The finish is dry before it is fully hard, so the doors are treated gently for a while after rehanging.
Can you paint thermofoil or laminate cabinet doors?
We do not paint thermofoil. It is a PVC film over MDF, and once it starts lifting near the oven or dishwasher it cannot be repaired, so paint on top would fail with it. High-pressure laminate is judged at the walk, door by door, and replacement doors in MDF or wood are often the better answer for those.
Will the new paint chip around the handles?
Chipping at the handles almost always traces back to grease left under the primer, which is why degreasing comes before sanding on every door. With a clean, scuffed surface and a bonding primer under a hard enamel, the edges that get handled hold up, and new pulls can go on during the job so their screw holes are drilled before the final coat.
Do you paint the inside of the cabinets?
Only if you want it. Most kitchens get the exterior faces, the face frames, the visible end panels and both sides of each door. Shelves and box interiors can be added to the scope, and they are priced separately because they double the surface area.
Can I see the colour before every door is sprayed?
Yes. We spray one door or drawer front in your colour and sheen and leave it in the kitchen so you can see it in morning and evening light. The full run is sprayed only after you approve that sample.
Do you refinish cabinets in rentals, offices or new homes?
Yes. Landlords turning a rental, offices with break room cabinetry and builders finishing model homes can send a cabinet count, photos or plans, and we price it per kitchen with a written schedule for each unit or suite.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. We walk the kitchen at no cost, count the doors and drawers, check the sink base and the old finish, and send a written quote with the scope, the products and the dates.
